I really don't think there's much you can do for "cleaning up the image". The most I can think of is taking the ol' boycott approach and refusing to support those who do the things you don't like (for example, not following certain artists and encouraging friends not to do the same) but in the end...well it's hard to control an entire fandom.
Let me be straight with you. I used to not like the fact that on places like FA people seemed to draw nothing but yiff art, but when you get down to it, there's a plethora of reasons why people do the things they do. Maybe by being a "furvert" with their art they're trying to explore sexuality via their character and what they draw or commission people to draw; maybe with sexual stories they're trying to do more than have characters be mere yiff puppets; and maybe those with the odd fetishes like plushphelia (sp) or zoophilia feel that somewhere like the fur fandom is a place where they can find others with like minds -- and people who won't damn them for something they happen to like. And there's nothing wrong with babyfurs -- maybe they had issues when they were a baby and maybe there's some other kind of issue we don't know about, and maybe their fascinated with the life as a babe. If it bothers you so, just ignore it.
The best thing to do is not pay attention to it, and ignore it. If someone keeps linking you to kinky art you don't like, let them know. If artwork on FA bothers you, flip the Safe For Work switch on. But you cannot and will not be able to "Clean up" the fandom; such a thing suggests you aim to do away with or change the minds of those who wish to engage in the things that you detest. And since the latter is not likely to happen, and nor the former, I suggest you try to move on from it and not let it bug you.
As for your "Straight laced" friends...well do the best you can to explain that yes, there are furverts in the fandom, but any fandom has people like that; Anime/Manga has the people drawing doushinji (sp), there's the perverted gamers who like to oogle jiggle physics of boobs, people who turn Role Playing into Sex Playing, and so on. If they can't seem to tolerate the fact you like furry because it's furry...well different folks different strokes; some just don't get why people like furry things.
Well, that's just about all I have to say on the subject. Just ignore the kinky stuff you don't like and go for the stuff you DO like -- stop focusing on the dark (or at least what's dark to you) and focus on your light in the fandom. Because if you focus on only the dark -- well you might just make your own candle dwindle in due time.
